So I kept coming across loads of recipes which used avocados in desserts – crazy right? I thought it was such an odd combination and just had to try them out for myself.
In a vegan dessert, it’s always the challenge to replace eggs, butter or cream cheese with something cruelty-free, and the humble avocado does a great job of doing just this, due to its high-fat content and smooth texture. As well as it’s subtle taste, it has a strong ability to soak up all the flavours infused into it – like the zesty key lime pie, or the fudgy chocolate brownies.
For me – avocados in desserts have been a revelation, and also makes me feel as though I can have that naughty dessert, as it is that bit healthier with all the goodness of the avocado inside it, and trust me – none of these recipes tastes the slightest bit like guacamole!
So here’s my round up of tried and tested avocado based vegan desserts – do check out the baker’s websites for beautiful photos, the full recipes and more inspiration, they’re all fantastic!

Key Lime Pie
from Emily at Pretty pies
The base of this Key Lime pie is unlike anything I’ve had before in a pie or tart. Usually, I’m used to more of a crumbly mixture with a biscuit consistency but this base is made from dates and almonds. You whizz them up in a blender until they form something that looks like a fine sticky gravel, (sorry I know that doesn’t sound very appealing but it tastes delicious!). The sticky, nutty base also really compliments the powerful zingy smooth key lime centre making a great flavour combo, this is one that I’ll be definitely making again soon.
from Erika at Living Well Mom
I made these brownies to share with friends for our Christmas dinner meet up, and we decorated them with festive drawings in icing pens, before devouring them with custard! I had Alpro Soya Custard which tastes just like the real thing. I also decided to add dark chocolate chunks to mine for extra chocolateyness, because who doesn’t love extra chocolate right? Suffice to say these were so chocolatey and moist!
Chocolate Avocado Pudding Truffles
from Natalie at Feasting on Fruit
This year I decided to bake some treats as Christmas presents for my family, one of which were these delicious chocolate avocado pudding truffles, they were so easy to make, and look effortlessly beautiful, especially when given as gifts. They could even be served as an after-dinner sweet with cocktails as an alternative to a whole dessert.
Vegan Avocado Chocolate Fudge
from Sierra at Nutritional Foodie
Another ridiculously easy recipe to make which takes just 10 minutes and tastes divine! I handed them straight out to family for Christmas but Sierra advises that – if you can hold back from devouring the lot you can store them in the freezer and pop them out whenever you have a chocolate craving. A great idea for vegans who need that sweet treat now and then which can often be tricky to find in supermarkets. Although times they are a changing! I tried a dairy-free almond Magnum ice-cream the other day which was heaven!
Dark Chocolate Avocado Truffles
from Emily at Inside the Rustic Kitchen
This was the third treat I made for my Christmas gifts for family – similar to the pudding truffles but with a slight difference in the ingredients and making process and coated with desiccated coconut instead of pistachios. I’m told both truffles tasted delicious!
In fact, my aunt’s response to these last three chocolatey delights was:
“Omg….your homemade chocolates are to die for…better than ANY you can buy”
Now if that’s not an endorsement for these amazing recipes I don’t know what is!
Thank you once again to these brilliant bakers for their great, healthy recipes and sneaking the humble avocado into our desserts to make them that bit healthier!
I don’t class my self as a great chef in the kitchen, but these recipes were so easy to follow and execute, so give them a try yourself!
